CAGI2 Conference

The CAGI 2011 Conference will take place December 9-10, 2011 at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Mission Bay campus.

We welcome all CAGI 2011 predictors, assessors, data providers, sponsors, and the members of our Advisory Board and Scientific Council to participate in the conference. Observers will be accommodated if space is available.

The aim of the CAGI Conference is to disseminate the results of the CAGI 2011 experiment and assess our collective ability to make accurate and meaningful predictions. CAGI assessors and selected predictors will give the majority of the talks at the conference, with significant time allocated for discussions. We welcome participants to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations. We especially encourage abstracts that present methods which were used for predictions on the CAGI 2011 challenges. Early registrations with a reduced registration fee will be accepted until November 11th, 2011. Space in the conference is limited, therefore early registration is strongly advised. Please see Registration for details on how to register for the conference.

The conference organizers have received an NHGRI R13 grant to support the conference. We will therefore be able to provide NHGRI conference fellowships to a substantial number of trainees (students and postdocs) who are US citizens. We are currently seeking additional financial support for non-American trainees. For details on how to apply for the conference fellowships, please see NHGRI conference fellowships.

Apart from the fellowships, attendees will need to cover all of their own expenses, including travel, parking and accommodation. The conference registration fee will cover light breakfast, coffee breaks, and lunch during the conference days (9-10 December), and the evening reception on Friday December 9th.

The public transportation system (Muni and BART) is an effective and functional way to travel within San Francisco. The UCSF Mission Bay campus is best reached by Muni T-Third Street line, which stops at the UCSF Mission Bay Station located on Third Street near 16th Street. The meeting location, Genentech Hall, is within a short walking distance from the UCSF Mission Bay Station. The poster size is 32 x 40 inches (appr. 81 x 102 cm). Posters will be mounted on boards, which will be on easels. The organizers will provide mounting material.

Dress is casual.

Despite being in California, the weather in San Francisco can be chilly and rainy year round.

The entire UCSF campus is smoke-free. California has strict anti-smoking laws so there will be no smoking in most public places.

Abstract Submission

We welcome abstracts for conference presentations.  When submitting your abstract, you will be able to select whether you would like to have your work to be considered for an oral or poster presentation, or for both. As noted earlier, there will be strong preference for oral presentations directly related to CAGI prediction submissions. Instructions on poster dimensions will be provided once space requirements are established.

In the event that several people from one group submit abstracts, the group PI should contact the organizers by email ([email protected]) to rank the applications.

The deadline for abstract submission is November 11th. To submit your abstract, you need to be registered and logged in on the CAGI website. Detailed instructions on the style, layout, and file format of the abstract are provided on the submission page. You must follow these guidelines carefully.

NHGRI Conference Fellowships

Trainees from groups that participated in the CAGI 2011 experiment are welcome to submit an application for a conference fellowship. We anticipate giving roughly 20 awards averaging around $750 per trainee to cover partial registration, travel and accommodation costs, though the amount will depend upon need and applications. According to NIH/NHGRI regulations we will only be able to support trainees who are U.S. citizens. 

In the event that multiple trainees from one group apply for a conference fellowship, the PI of that group is requested to contact the organizers by email ([email protected]) and provide a ranking of the applications.

To apply for the conference support, trainees will need to submit a presentation abstract, and a personal statement. Instructions on how to prepare the abstract are provided in the Abstract submission section. The personal statement should be 75-200 words, and should include a statement on why you should be given the travel award. In addition, you are asked to define your role in making CAGI 2011 predictions. The scientifically strongest abstracts (as measured by both methodological interest and performance at CAGI) will have the strongest chance of receiving travel funds. Particular attention will be paid to allot awards to women, underrepresented minorities, and persons with disabilities. Please indicate in your application if you wish to be considered in one of these categories.

Accommodation

The CAGI organizers will not arrange for a hotel block or reserve accommodation for conference participants. The participants must arrange their own accommodation, and we advise participants to reserve their rooms early. The discussion forum available on CAGI website for registered users may be used for accommodation discussions and room sharing.

When booking your hotel, we recommend that you make sure there is a Muni T-Third Street line station within a short walking distance, so that you can easily reach the conference location. The registration fee will be refunded minus a $50.00 processing fee if the cancellation request is received before November 25th. After November 25th, we will not be able to refund registration fees.
